XY Space

XY Space manual

Installing XY Space, what distance and scale move, the presets, and how it behaves on a send and as an insert.

Installing

Windows. Copy XY Space.vst3 into C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3.

macOS. Run the installer, which places the VST3 in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3 and the Audio Unit in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components.

Linux. Copy XY Space.vst3 into ~/.vst3 or /usr/lib/vst3, and XY Space.lv2 into ~/.lv2 or /usr/lib/lv2.

The plug-in reports no latency.

The pad

X — Close … Far. Distance. Moving right darkens and narrows the direct sound, shifts the balance towards the reflected sound, and moves the early reflections later and closer together.

Y — Small … Huge. Scale. Moving up lengthens the delays and the decay and spreads the early field out in time.

Drag the pad, or double-click to return to the centre.

The controls

Control Range What it does
Mix 0–100 % Balance between the direct sound and the reverb.
Input ±24 dB Level into the reverb.
Output ±24 dB Level out.
Wet on/off Reverb only, for use on a send.
Bypass on/off Crossfades to the dry signal.

Mix at 0 % is the input. The distance colouring of the direct sound is part of the effect, so it fades out with the reverb, and it is at full depth by the time Mix reaches 15 %. Every factory preset sits above that, so each models its distance in full.

Notes

  • On a send, set Wet and leave Mix at 100 %.
  • Recalling a preset while audio is playing fades the reverb out, clears the network and fades it back in over about 300 ms, rather than jumping.
  • Transport stop or locate clears the tail, so a bounce starts from silence.
  • The reported tail is 15.4 s. If your host offers a render tail, that is the figure it will use.
